On October 21, 2022, Pro Bono Project attorneys met with clients of Goodwill Industries Silicon Valley to talk about opportunities and procedures for record clearance. PBP Supervising Attorney Andrew Messersmith led two presentations on mandatory and discretionary expungement law for folks who are recently out of custody, as well as new changes to record clearance law coming in 2023. The team also fielded questions and provided additional information to Goodwill clients.
Goodwill is often one of the first program opportunities for individuals after custody. Among the many services it offers, Goodwill provides job placement, programming, and career training. Pro Bono Project’s opportunity to be a part of Goodwill’s programming is a valuable collaboration with this community resource. Coordinated with Vinessa Lira and Pablo Gaxiola of Goodwill Industries, this was the first of many moments to bring crucial information on record clearance to individuals following their release from incarceration. Pro Bono Project also looks forward to developing other presentations for Goodwill clients on important topics as they re-enter their communities.
